Step onto the streets of Thailand during the Songkran Festival, and you'll find yourself caught up in a whirlwind of laughter, excitement, and refreshing water battles. Known as the 'Thai New Year,' Songkran is an important and cherished traditional celebration in Thailand. It is a time when communities come together to wash away the misfortunes and evils of the past year, eagerly welcoming the arrival of a fresh chapter in their lives.
The Songkran Festival holds immense cultural significance in Thailand, and its traditions and customs have been faithfully recreated in Hong Kong for the past ten years. Besides the long-awaited carnival in the Kowloon City District, this year, the SongKran HK 2024 will also take place in Lai Chi Kok, showcasing the best of Thai traditions and festivities in Hong Kong.
At the core of SongKran HK 2024 is the cherished tradition of water-splashing. The streets of Hong Kong transform into lively “playgrounds” as people of all ages engage in cheerful water fights. Armed with water pistols and buckets, participants joyfully drench each other, symbolizing the washing away of misfortunes from past year.
Moreover, SongKran HK 2024 offers much more than just water fights. The event presents a diverse range of cultural experiences and activities that encapsulate the essence of the Songkran Festival, including the pouring of scented water onto Buddha statues, the Nang Songkran Parade, Thai traditional costumes experience and the performance of cultural extravaganza. A wide array of delectable Thai street food such as Thai Skewers, Tom Yum Goong, Thai Mango Sticky Rice, Thai milk tea, and a broad variety of handicrafts such as wood carvings will also be merchandised in Cheung Yee Street, turning it a Chatuchat style market for Thailand lovers.
It is a time when the past is washed away, and the future is greeted with open arms. Come to visit it from 4-8 April.
