Students go mental with schools on Maps

Schools across Hong Kong have been renamed on Google Maps, with a secondary school in Fo Tan famous for producing athletes and artists renamed Fo Tan Sanctuary for the Severely Mentally Disabled, following a prank trend in Taiwan.

Fo Tan Sanctuary for the Severely Mentally Disabled was originally Jockey Club Ti-I College, before being discovered by users online early yesterday. The school is famed for its visual arts and sports.

The prank followed Buddhist Tai Hung College which was renamed Nobi Nobita College, most likely due to the school's name resembling a Doraemon anime character.

Fukien Secondary School in Kwun Tong was renamed Fukien Fried Rice Secondary School, while Tseung Kwan O Government Primary School was renamed TKO Psychiatric Hospital.

Meanwhile, it also affected some mobile applications that use the services, including Uber, KMB app and Lalamove.

Renaming places on Google Maps is made possible due to its policy.

If a business owner has not been officially registered, it does not require verifications.
