New key figure for Jockey club

Martin Liao Cheung-kong has been elected the Hong Kong Jockey Club's deputy chairman following the retirement of Eric Li Ka-cheung, who turned 70 yesterday.

The 65-year-old Liao is a commercial constituency lawmaker, a non-official Executive Council member, a member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and also a barrister.

He has been a member of the club since 1988 and became a voting member in 2002 and a steward in 2013.

He has served as chairman or a member of several statutory and advisory bodies, including the Advisory Committee on Corruption of the Independent Commission Against Corruption.

Meanwhile, the outgoing Li served on the Board of Stewards since 2010 and was elected deputy chairman in 2022. Li has served in 17 committee roles in the club.

He has been invited to be an honorary steward. Jockey Club chairman Michael Lee Tze-hau thanked Li for his contributions and said: "We will greatly miss his wise counsel."
