Lawmaker Judy Chan Kapui has been formally charged with the offence of careless driving after she was filmed driving against the flow of traffic down Jaffe Road in Wan Chai.
The incident occurred on January 23, when Chan was captured on video driving against traffic as several fire trucks with flashing lights responded to an emergency ahead. The footage quickly circulated online, drawing widespread criticism from the public.
Chan responded to the incident by stating that she was rushing to a meeting and believed it was safe to proceed into a car park, stressing that she did not impede the work of the firefighters.
The lawmaker later issued a formal apology on social media and reported herself to the police the following day.
According to the Code for Members of the Legislative Council, the Legislative Council Supervisory Committee will address any misconduct complaints against the lawmakers.
Police Commissioner Joe Chow Yat-ming said on January 31 that authorities had investigated the case and taken a statement from Chan.
