The Education Bureau has confirmed it is investigating a suspected case of AI‑assisted cheating at a primary school in Shek Kip Mei, ELCHK Faith Lutheran School.
The school said it has required the entire class to retake the test today to ensure fairness.
It is understood that the assessment – a Chinese oral assessment for sixth-grade students – required students to deliver short speeches on a topic announced during the exam. One student allegedly disclosed the topic to classmates waiting outside, who then used AI tools to prepare their speeches in advance.
Under Secretary for Education Jeff Sze Chun‑fai said the bureau is following up with the school. He suggested measures such as installing cameras to prevent cheating.
Meanwhile, at a media luncheon yesterday, Education Secretary Christine Choi Yuk‑lin reiterated that the government’s proposed teacher practicing certificate plan – which would require 150 hours of professional development over a three period – is designed with flexibility, taking into account practices in different regions and allowing even reading to count toward the total.
Choi also revealed that teachers who have not taught for years would only need to complete 60 hours of training. She said the government will work with universities to organize relevant courses to support their return to classrooms.
