Drivers to face $2,000 fines for using over two electronic devices

Drivers must not place more than two mobile telecommunications devices (MTDs) in front of them during driving starting from today (Jan 25), while offenders will be liable to a maximum fine of HK$2,000.

Applicable devices under the arrangement include mobile phones, tablet computers, and laptop computers. It stipulates that the diagonal length of each screen must not exceed 19 centimeters. 

The Transport Department especially reminded that foldable phones exceeding 19 centimeters when unfolded are also prohibited from being used in an open state.

The MTDs must not obstruct the driver's view of the road and traffic, as well as any mirror, device, or camera monitor fitted for viewing the road, the authority stressed.

The new rule took effect concurrently with the requirement that all seated passengers in public transport and commercial vehicles must wear seat belts.
