Union warns of hidden dangers during year-end home cleaning

As year-end spring cleaning approaches, the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions urges both professional cleaners and residents to prioritize safety to avoid injuries from common but risky tasks.

The union highlights that home cleaning appears straightforward but carries significant hazards if precautions are ignored. Chairperson Fu Siu-ping stresses the need for vigilance.

When cleaning windows, check for rust or wear on handles, hinges, grilles and screws caused by long-term exposure to sun and rain. 

Ensure windows open safely and never force them. Avoid leaning out of high, large or unguarded windows; use appropriate long-handled tools instead.

For high areas, always choose stable equipment such as safety ladders or four-legged stools rather than folding chairs, which can cause loss of balance and falls.

The union advises against mixing different cleaning products, as incompatible ingredients may generate toxic gases or trigger fires. Read labels carefully before use.

Residents and cleaners are reminded to ensure good ventilation during cleaning, wear masks and gloves, and minimise direct skin contact with chemicals to reduce health risks.
