With the arrival of the New Year, a viral slap delivered to a cheating boyfriend echoed across the internet, turning a teenage couple’s confrontation into the year's first cup of scalding hot tea.
The viral footage was uploaded on Threads in the early hours of New Year’s Day, where the girlfriend recounted how she caught her boyfriend cheating during New Year's Eve celebrations at a Tsim Sha Tsui shopping mall.
The incident unfolded after the girlfriend discovered her boyfriend had invited her close friend to join him for countdown festivities when she could not attend.
The friend recognized him from photos and informed the girlfriend, and the pair planned a sting operation.
The boyfriend arrived by taxi at the mall, reportedly asking the friend to pay the fare.
A loud slap caught on camera
In the two uploaded videos, the poster, wearing a white hoodie and shorts, is angrily approaching him in a grey hoodie near an elevator lobby while he is on a phone call.
She pushed him against a wall, demanded answers, and slapped him hard, knocking the phone from his hand.
She then grabbed her bag and strode away, leaving him to pick up the device in silence.
In follow-up posts, the poster shared identifying details about her now-ex-boyfriend, warning others.
“Beware of this guy, born in 2008, living in Tuen Mun, and flirting around on Threads,” she wrote.
She alleged that he frequently created new social media accounts to approach women online, often using the excuse that his "Instagram was banned" to shift conversations to WeChat.
Mixed reaction online
Reaction to the couple’s split-up has sparked divided reaction online; while some users applauded the poster for taking a stand, others criticized her for public shaming and violence.
In response, the poster clarified her intent, saying, "I hoped to alert everyone so they don't end up like me."
Surprised by their young age, many advised focusing on studies. The girl acknowledged the advice briefly.
As the story continues to circulate, much of the online community has settled into the role of spectators, amused to have been served a full-blown drama with their New Year's breakfast.
