Peking University is considering establishing a research institute at the Northern Metropolis University Town (NMUT) in the future, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said.
Lee met He Guangcai, secretary of the Communist Party committee of Peking University, on Wednesday (Dec 17), a day after reporting to President Xi Jinping in Beijing during a duty visit.
He said the Working Group on Planning and Construction of the University Town was established earlier this year under the Committee on the Development of the Northern Metropolis to study the development model for NMUT.
Lee expressed support for the university town’s development plan and said Peking University had indicated an intention to set up a research institute there in the future.
He said he was encouraged by the development and exchanged views with He on the progress of the university town.
Separately, Lee met four Hong Kong youths over breakfast and encouraged them to study cutting-edge technologies and boldly put their ideas into practice to drive innovation and technology development in both Hong Kong and the mainland.
He also said collaboration between Hong Kong and other Greater Bay Area cities in innovation and technology offers significant potential.
Lee noted that the establishment of the Greater Bay Area National Center of Technology Innovation was listed as one of eight major tasks at the Central Economic Work Conference held last week.
Of the four youths, three are working in Beijing in innovation-related fields, including educational technology, medical devices, and Web3, while the remaining participant is the first Hong Kong student to study aerospace engineering at Peking University.
