A 36-year-old local woman was arrested at Hong Kong International Airport on Monday for allegedly smuggling cannabis buds worth about HK$1.1 million from Thailand.
Police from the Tuen Mun district anti-triad unit intercepted the woman at the arrival hall. During a search of her luggage conducted with the assistance of relevant departments, officers found 10 bricks of suspected cannabis buds weighing approximately five kilograms.
An investigation suggested the woman was recruited and financially incentivized by a drug trafficking syndicate to carry the drugs from Thailand to Hong Kong.
She has been charged with one count of trafficking in dangerous drugs and is scheduled to appear at West Kowloon Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.
Police reiterated that assisting in drug smuggling into Hong Kong in any form is illegal. They emphasized that cross-border elements in such cases are considered an aggravating factor in sentencing. Drug trafficking is a serious offense, carrying a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a HK$5 million fine under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance.
