A 31-year-old senior inspector has died after falling unconscious during a selection test for the police force's elite Special Duties Unit, commonly known as the "Flying Tigers," last week.
Commissioner of Police Joe Chow Yat-ming said the officer, surnamed Wong, was a candidate in the advanced selection process on December 4. During a segment involving diving, Wong lost consciousness after entering the water off Lamma Island. He was given immediate first aid by the unit's medical team and taken to Princess Margaret Hospital for emergency brain surgery. He passed away on Wednesday night with his family, friends and colleagues by his side.
Wong joined the force in 2016 and was promoted to senior inspector in 2021. He had served for over nine years and was an instructor at the Police Tactical Unit headquarters.
Chow said the officer was wearing required safety gear, including a helmet, wetsuit gloves and sports shoes, before the dive. He followed instructions for the jump but gradually lost consciousness after surfacing.
Describing Wong as a young, determined and outstanding colleague, Chow expressed deep sorrow over his death on behalf of the force. The case will be handled by the Hong Kong Island regional unit and a report submitted to the coroner.
Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung also expressed sadness and offered condolences to the family, pledging full support from the Security Bureau and police force.
Secretary for the Civil Service Ingrid Yeung Ho Poi-yan conveyed deep condolences, stating her bureau has contacted the police and will assist the family.
