Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan Kwok-ki announced on Tuesday that the Election Fun Day, originally scheduled for December 6, will be canceled in light of the deadly five-alarm fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po.
Chan confirmed that the Legislative Council election will proceed as scheduled on December 7. The eight suspended election forums for functional constituencies will resume on Wednesday (Dec 3) and Thursday (Dec 4), with discussions to include issues related to the tragic blaze.
All events planned for Election Fun Day, including the “Let’s Vote, Together We Create the Future Gala” at the West Kowloon Cultural District and various community carnivals, will be canceled.
However, government incentives for voter participation will remain in place. Thank-you cards will still be distributed to those who cast their ballots, and free admission to destinations such as the Hong Kong Wetland Park and public museums will continue.
Chan stressed that the administration has sufficient manpower to undertake both disaster relief efforts and the election.
He said the government will ensure that “neither takes priority over the other,” urging the public to stay engaged with both the unfolding aftermath of the fire and their civic duties.
Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang Kwok-wai said three polling stations in Tai Po affected by the fire will be relocated within the district.
Authorities will inform affected residents through the “one social worker per household” support mechanism, and transportation will be provided for those wishing to vote, he said.
