Search in progress for man jumps off Tsing Ma Bridge

A man leapt from the Tsing Ma Bridge at around 3am on Sunday after spending eight hours outside the bridge's guardrail.

The 48-year-old man, surnamed Tung, had taken a taxi from Shek Wai Kok Commercial Centre at around 7pm, indicating that his destination was Tung Chung. While traversing the Tsing Ma Bridge towards the airport, Tung requested that the taxi driver maneuver to the left so that he could appreciate the scenery. He subsequently demanded that the driver stop the vehicle.

When the driver declined to comply, Tung reacted with hostility, kicking the car door and insisting on disembarking. 

The driver acquiesced to his demands and halted the taxi. Tung then proceeded to cross the guardrail and sit on the edge of the bridge.

The 67-year-old taxi driver, surnamed Choi, called the police for assistance. 

A police negotiator was dispatched to persuade Tung; however, he remained resolute in his intentions. At 3.46am, Mr. Tung jumped from the bridge, prompting an ongoing search and rescue operation.

Preliminary efforts by officers at 5am resulted in the recovery of Tung's personal belongings, and attempts were made to notify his family.

Reports indicate that Tung has a 21-year-old son who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and requires treatment at Kwai Chung Hospital, as well as follow-up assistance from social workers. 

It has been noted that Tung recently resigned from his employment to provide care for his son, who has been hospitalized for treatment again.
