A 40-year-old solicitor faces jail after pleading guilty to repeatedly having sex with a 12-year-old girl he met on an adults-only dating app, with his defense lawyer telling a court on Monday that the child had been the one to initiate sexual conversations, send nude photos, and even ask whether he had condoms at home.

Kelvin Luk Kin-ting admitted to five charges—two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13, two counts of making child pornography, and one count of causing a child under 16 to make indecent images—for acts committed in March 2024 at his Tsing Yi flat. Prosecutors say he took more than 200 explicit photos and videos of the girl during two separate encounters.
During mitigation at the District Court, senior counsel Vinci Lam argued that Luk had no pedophilic tendencies, believed the girl was older when they first matched on the 18+ platform Heymandi, and only realized she was underage after seeing her photos.
She said the girl repeatedly steered chats toward sex, sent naked pictures unprompted, asked for more vigorous intercourse after their first meeting, and later demanded he become her boyfriend.
Lam stressed the encounters were consensual, involved no money or coercion, and that a trauma assessment found the girl showed no signs of post-traumatic stress.
Lam also portrayed Luk as a high-achieving professional from a difficult childhood whose parents divorced when he was young, yet he still earned degrees from the University of Science and Technology and Chinese University before obtaining a law doctorate and practicing overseas.
She highlighted his charitable donation of HK$1 million to the Real Madrid Foundation a decade ago and strong family support as evidence of good character, while Luk expressed remorse and was assessed as low risk for reoffending.
Sentencing was adjourned until December 4. Unlawful sexual intercourse with a child under 13 carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
