The MTR Corporation announced that passengers aged 65 or above will be able to enjoy free rides across its network on Senior Citizens Day, which falls on November 16.
During the one-day event, seniors using the JoyYou Card, Elder Octopus, or Personal Octopus can travel free of charge on all MTR heavy rail lines, Light Rail, and MTR Bus services.
However, the offer does not apply to the Airport Express, cross-boundary East Rail Line services to and from Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau stations, or the High Speed Rail. Travellers using the First Class on the East Rail Line must still pay the additional First Class surcharge.
MTR’s Managing Director for transport services, Jeny Yeung Mei-chun, said the initiative reflects the corporation’s commitment to the community.
“Through our annual Elderly Day Free Ride offer, we hope to express our respect for senior citizens and encourage them to go out more often, stay active, and strengthen community bonds,” she said.
Yeung added that the MTR continues to enhance its facilities and services to make travel more comfortable and accessible for older passengers.
“We want every journey to be easy and enjoyable for our elderly passengers,” she noted.
The MTR Corporation has also been working closely with community groups to better understand the specific needs of senior passengers, regularly investing in upgrades to station facilities and services.
In recent years, the company has partnered with the Elder Academy to run the “Railway 101” program, which has trained more than 380 senior participants as “Caring Ambassadors.” These ambassadors help promote safe and smart travel while spreading the spirit of care throughout Hong Kong’s railway network.
