Nine people were injured on Monday (Mar 16) around noon when a private car lost control and mounted a pavement in Kowloon Bay. A female passenger was thrown from the vehicle after not wearing a seatbelt and briefly lost consciousness before being hospitalized in stable condition.
The incident occurred at about 12.41pm on Lam Hing Street, near Metro Centre. Photos online showed the car damaging railings, trees, and metal posts, with three people lying on the ground.
Police said the 75-year-old driver, the passenger’s husband, may have mistaken the accelerator for the brake while turning. The car struck eight pedestrians, leaving seven men and two women aged 18 to 75 injured. Other victims suffered various injuries to the head, hands, and body, including one person with a neck injury.
At the scene, many of the injured were sitting on the ground awaiting treatment. Paramedics triaged and dressed wounds before transporting victims to hospital. The car’s front end was heavily damaged.
After investigation, police said there appears to be no criminal intent. The driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm, and the case remains under investigation.
