The restaurant was packed during its final lunch service, with families and loyal patrons forming long queues at the entrance and around the central dim sum counter, waiting for freshly prepared dishes.
The bustling scene reflected the eatery’s enduring popularity among a diverse crowd, from families to long-time supporters.
The restaurant, part of the Japan-based Heichinrou group that entered the Hong Kong market in the 1990s, was cherished for its relatively affordable prices compared to other dining options in the area, particularly for those working in nearby Central.
Some patrons noted a decline in popularity of traditional Chinese dining, especially among younger generations, expressing regret over the closure of such a longstanding venue.
Reports indicate that last year, Heichinrou mortgaged Metropol’s premises to a Japanese company for a loan of approximately HK$290 million.
The property was later purchased by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, which plans to repurpose the entire floor for educational use.
Heichinrou continues to operate branches in Diamond Hill and Kwun Tong, preserving its presence in Hong Kong despite the closure of its Admiralty location.
