As Super Typhoon Ragasa intensifies, the Hong Kong Observatory escalated its warning to an No. 8 Gale or Storm Signal at 2.20pm today.
Coastal areas, particularly Heng Fa Chuen, a neighborhood often hard-hit by typhoons, are already feeling the storm’s wrath.
By around 1pm today, waves reaching two to three meters high began crashing ashore, flooding pedestrian pathways.
Nearby residential estates have taken precautions, having installed flood barriers and sandbags to mitigate potential water damage.
Near Mercedes-Benz Brand Centre on Chai Wan’s Ka Yip Street, massive waves breached the breakwater, spilling into the building’s parking lot.
While the ground showed signs of water, no significant flooding was reported.
Despite the hazardous conditions, some residents were seen braving the elements to observe the towering waves along the shore, undeterred by the dangerous surf.
Social media footage captured a dramatic scene along Shing Tai Road, where a stormwater drain cover was dislodged by powerful backflow from the sea.
The intense water pressure sent a geyser-like column of water shooting several stories high, resembling a fountain and highlighting the storm’s forceful impact on the city’s infrastructure.
