The Consumer Council found in a test that 90 percent of the clay mask models contained at least one type of heavy metal.
The results were revealed after the watchdog tested 30 clay mask models formulated with various mineral clays as the main ingredient, with prices ranging from HK$79 to HK$610 per jar or tube.
Arsenic was detected in 22 models, while lead was detected in 28 models.
One model, from Aromatica, was found to contain 3.1mg/kg of arsenic and 14mg/kg of lead, exceeding the upper limits set by both mainland China and the US.
“The test results and product information have been referred to the Customs and Excise Department for follow-up,” the council said.
Among the tested models, no heavy metals were detected in two models from Chanel and Sulwhasoo, respectively.
Meanwhile, 40 percent of the models contained one to five types of fragrance allergens. The most commonly detected substances were linalool and limonene, found in nine and six models, respectively.
The council warned that the potential risk of causing allergic reactions increases with the amount of fragrance allergens a product contains.
Individuals with a history of eczema or sensitive skin are advised to avoid products with high concentrations or multiple types of allergenic substances.
Regarding product labelling, three models did not provide detailed ingredient lists in either Chinese or English. One model was also found not to indicate an expiry date or the period after opening.
“Manufacturers should consider improving product labelling proactively,” the council urged.
Additionally, the watchdog recommends consumers read the ingredient list, user instructions, and labelling carefully before purchase.
