The Development Bureau will continue to promote Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) internationally, with the goal of establishing it as a globally competitive construction brand, according to Secretary for Development Bernadette Linn Hon-ho.
Linn's blog today highlighted the Development Bureau’s proactive efforts to encourage the industry to adopt MiC for productivity and cost-effectiveness, which are currently being utilized in over 100 government and private projects.
During a series of co-hosted activities with the Development Bureau and Urban-Rural Development of Guangdong Province (DHURDGP) from June 23 to 28, Linn noted several measures aimed at promoting broader adoption of MiC were announced.
These included the introduction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong Modular Integrated Construction Cross-boundary Trading Guidebook compiled by the Development Bureau and the first MiC Annual Demand Forecast to strengthen the MiC supply chain.
Additionally, Linn reported that certificates were delivered to a group of eight manufacturers accredited under the MiC Manufacturer Accreditation Scheme, signifying a significant step toward improving MiC building standards in Hong Kong.
Certificate required for government projects
Introduced by the Building Technology Research Institute (BTRi), this certificate will be mandatory for bidding on government projects.
It is reported that relevant departments, such as the Buildings Department and Water Supplies Department, will also simplify the approval and acceptance procedures for recognized manufacturers.
Chairperson of the BTRi, Hon Chi-keung, stated that the institute will regularly review and enhance evaluation standards and promotions on MiC technology and recognition programs globally, thus opening up international markets for recognized producers.
Leading hub for MiC technology
The BTRi, in collaboration with institutions such as the University of Hong Kong's MiC Laboratory (MiCLab), is refining the MiC construction standards in the GBA, aiming to enhance connectivity in cross-border and global markets.
Furthermore, Linn underlined the government's active promotion of the MiC method in international markets, noting that delegations from Qatar and Ireland have expressed strong interest in MiC.
Emphasizing the commitment to promoting the MiC construction method both locally and internationally, Linn expressed wishes to establish the GBA as a leading hub for MiC technology, transforming MiC into a globally competitive construction brand.
