Pet owners reported smooth experiences and well-behaved animal companions on Thursday as MTR launched its pilot scheme that allows passengers to bring their cats or dogs aboard the Light Rail.
During the initiative’s inaugural run, dozens of passengers traveled with pets. The scheme allows each owner to bring one cat or dog on weekends and public holidays with a HK$99 monthly pass.
Cheng, a pet owner who lives in Tuen Mun South brought Smarty, his corgi, for the maiden voyage. He was happy with the arrangement.
“Today's experience was great,” Cheng said while his excited pet peered around the train carriage. “Smarty is clearly enjoying the ride.”

The owner noted significant savings compared to his usual transportation, adding, “One single taxi trip typically costs HK$50 or more. The Light Rail option is more affordable and convenient for pet owners.”
The MTR maintains strict regulations for the trial as pets must be carried in fully enclosed pet bags with total dimensions no longer than 170 centimeters and no single side exceeding 130cm. Strollers and wheeled carriers are prohibited.
Owners must board through rear doors and remain in designated carriage areas throughout the journey.
Cheng praised the service but suggested allowing strollers in the future, noting that carrying a pet over 10kg can be exhausting on long-haul trips without seats.
Cheris Lee Yuen-ling, MTR Corporation's chief of operating and metro segment, reported strong compliance during smooth first-day operations.
The company deployed 70 additional staff across busier stations and will enhance carriage cleaning during the trial.
Lee said the company is closely monitoring the situation, suggesting that the scheme extension is possible.
She also called for mutual understanding and respect among passengers and advised passengers preferring distance from pets to use front sections of the trains.
