Wang Yang, the former vice-president of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been appointed as the vice-president of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), responsible for institute advancement, effective on August 1.
In a letter to the faculty members and students, HKU president Zhang Xiang noted the appointment was approved in a meeting of the HKU Council on January 14 following a global recruitment.
Zhang expressed confidence that with the international vision, rich administrative experience, and strong network, Wang will effectively drive the development of HKU.
The position of vice-president in charge of institutional advancement of HKU has been vacant since mid-2017, with interim vice-president filling the position intermittently over the past eight years.
Wang received his Doctoral Degree from Harvard University in 1990 and joined the HKUST as the head of the Department of Mathematics in 2014.
After being appointed Dean of the School of Science in 2016, he has served as the vice president at UST since 2020.
