Following the closure of the Sunbeam Theatre in March, a new chapter could begin as a press release circulating online claims the 50-year-old theatre will lease the site of Golden Harvest in Whampoa, which is set to cease operations on April 10, according to sources.
In response to media inquiries, the Chief Executive Officer of the theatre Alan Lai confirmed that they have secured the location of the Golden Harvest Whampoa Cinema.
He added that the details of the arrangements will be provided by Edward Li Kui-ming -- the theater's chairman and a Cantonese opera playwright -- at a press conference scheduled for later this month.
According to the leaked press release, the theatre plans to establish a new landmark named "Sunbeam Whampoa", featuring an exhibition area in the lobby, which is slated to open in June to continue the Cantonese opera spirit.
Additionally, the release also hinted at Lee's plans to establish a fund to support local film and Cantonese opera promotions to nurture the arts in the city.
