The city’s iconic rugby tournament, which will be held in the Kai Tak Sports Park this year for the first time, will see 30 elite rugby teams competing in 72 matches, which are expected to draw thousands of fans worldwide.
Organized by HKTB, the opening ceremony will dazzle with a laser show, while the closing ceremony will light up the night sky with a pyrotechnic display against the stadium’s open canopy roof.
“These visual spectacles, combined with traditional lion and dragon dance performances, aim to create a festival-like atmosphere that celebrates both rugby and Hong Kong’s vibrant culture,” HKTB said in a statement on Monday.
Adding to the excitement, South Korea’s KIA Tigers Cheerleaders – Apex, famous for their viral Pikki Pikki dance, will make their Hong Kong debut. Their high-energy routines and flash mob performances in the Fan Village are sure to be crowd favorites.
The stadium’s south stand will come alive with performances by international stars, including UK electronic dance music pioneer DJ Pete Tong, Italian singer-songwriter GALA, and British rock band Kaiser Chiefs.
The new Fan Village at the park will offer live match broadcasts, food stalls, bars, retail stores, and a kids’ area, making it a perfect spot for families to enjoy the action.
HKTB has created a dedicated webpage with guides to Kai Tak Sports Park, including transport tips, dining spots, and Instagram-worthy locations. Special deals on shopping, dining, and entertainment will enhance the tournament experience for visitors.
HKTB is rolling out targeted promotions to attract international fans, including exclusive Hong Kong Sevens tour packages for Australians and New Zealanders.
Advertisements in Sydney and London, along with social media campaigns featuring rugby stars like Ryan Wilson and Matt Giteau, aim to boost global interest.
Influencers from mainland social media Xiaohongshu will also share their experiences, showcasing Hong Kong as a premier events hub.
HKTB is also hosting senior tourism executives from Australia, the UK, and other countries to promote Kai Tak Sports Park and Hong Kong’s attractions.
The delegation will experience the Sevens, visit landmarks like Victoria Peak, and explore local food tours, aiming to inspire more event-themed tourism products.
Meanwhile, Sino Development (International) Company, a local taxi operator, said the trade has met with the Transport Department. The authorities and the sports park will assist in designating various locations for convenient taxi pick-ups and drop-offs, as well as inform cabbies to pick up passengers at the park through phone calls.
Chief operations officer Alan Chan Chung-yee of Miramar Group said its hotels will arrange free shuttle buses to the venue and collaborate with taxi fleets to transport guests to the park, as well as launch themed activities for the event, including booking discounts, three-day free beer passes, and extended check-in and check-out times.
