The Democratic Party will start preparation for winding up after over three decades of operation, chairman Lo Kin-hei said after a meeting within its central committee.
Speaking in a press briefing, Lo said the party’s 11-strong leading central committee agreed to start procedures to disband the oldest pro-democracy party in the SAR.
A three-man task force, consisting of chairman Lo Kin-hei, vice chairman Mok Kin-shing and central committee member Leung Wing-kuen, will be established to start preparatory work to disband the party.
The party will officially wind up after gaining the support of over 75 percent of party members in a vote held in a general meeting, which should be attended by no less than 50 members.
Lo said the party was still working on suggestions for the upcoming budget as of Wednesday.
"We hope that we can continue to serve Hongkongers and contribute to the city," he said, adding it was a pity that the party ended up in this situation.
"We all believe in Hong Kong residents who are capable of solving different problems when facing dilemmas."
