The Hongkonger claimed in a Threads post that she almost "got kidnapped" while on a Grab ride -- a popular Southeast Asia ride-hailing service -- on Phu Quoc Island.
Due to the heavy rain, the poster was thrown off guard until the vehicle unexpectedly entered a one-way road, only to find an oncoming car blocking the path ahead.
The poster shared a screenshot of the route, revealing that it was completely in the opposite direction of her intended destination.
She recounted how she seized the chance to make her escape while the Grab driver was embroiled in an argument with another driver. After getting free, she quickly hailed another car to take her back to the hotel.
The post sparked a heated discussion online, with some claiming the app would warn the user if the driver veered from the original path, citing an experience with a warning appearing when they stopped at a convenience store during the ride.
However, the poster claimed there were no such notifications during the ride.
Others doubted the incident might have been a misunderstanding, suggesting the driver might have wanted to take a longer detour. Additionally, an internet user recalled a similar encounter in Hoi An, where Grab's map showed two distinct locations for the same destination.
While some questioned the poster's fear of being taken to KK Park owing to Phu Quoc being an island separated from Cambodia, several expressed concern over the poster's experience and agreed with her recommendation to be more alert.
