Man arrested for robbing and knifing police officer in Yau Ma Tei

A 36-year-old man holding a recognizance form, commonly known as "going-out passes," was arrested on Sunday after robbing and assaulting a Police Tactical Unit officer in Yau Ma Tei.  

The 39-year-old off-duty officer, surnamed Lai, was almost robbed of his wallet by a non-Chinese man at the intersection of Nanking Street and Nathan Road at around 1 a.m. on Saturday (Oct 2).  

Despite identifying himself as a police officer, Lai was knifed multiple times and attempted to subdue the suspect, but in vain. The suspect fled the scene without completing the robbery.  

Sources said that injuries to Lai's forearm, knees, and neck left wounds ranging from 2 to 5 centimeters. Emergency services sent him to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and he was discharged on the same day.

The suspect is a Pakistani who had arrived Hong Kong for more than 10 years, according to sources. Police said the suspect tried to commit the crime late at night when people were tired and less alert.
