Kelvin Wong Tin-yau has been appointed as the chairman of the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) for a term of three years from October 20.
SFC announced on Monday that Wong, the current chairman of the Accounting and Financial Reporting Council, will succeed Tim Lui Tim-leung after Lui completed his six-year term on October 19.
Wong previously served as a Non-Executive Director of SFC from 2012 to 2018 and was Chairman of the Investor Education Centre, now known as the Investor and Financial Education Council, from 2017 to 2018.
Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po emphasized Wong's extensive experience in securities and futures markets, corporate governance, and financial regulation.
He expressed hope that the SFC will effectively fulfill its dual role as both a regulator and a promoter of market development under Wong's leadership.
Chan also noted that during Lui's tenure, the SFC implemented various market reform measures and supported the development of the regulatory framework, including the licensing system for virtual asset trading platforms.
