People were urged to remain vigilant after a scammer had been going around impersonating fencer Edgar Cheung Ka-long and asking people to transfer them money and would give them a portion of the jockey club cash bonus, leading to widespread online discussion.
This came after Hong Kong's top fencer Edgar Cheung Ka-long has written himself into history after defending his Olympic foil title on Tuesday by beating Italy's Filippo Macchi 15-14.
Afterwards, there has been a screenshot spreading online showing a conversation from someone who was impersonating Cheung.
The impersonator claimed that he was Cheung and stated he was currently competing at the Paris Olympics but needed around 5,000 RMB, along with stating that it was around HK$6,000, to take out the fencing foil he put in the locker.
The person also provided an electronic payment code and guaranteed that if they helped him, he would add them to his personal fan group, along with sharing with them a share of the “Jockey Club Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme,” a HK$6 million cash bonus.
After this screenshot was posted online, many people were making fun of the scammer for calculating the conversion rate wrong, with some stating that they were waiting for Vivian Kong to find them, along with some netizens stating that they should be doing better in order to scam people.
Later, news medias tested the phone number via the police Scameter and it was marked as high-risk.
The website urged citizens to avoid trading with or sending money to the other party, to not enter any personal information, credit card information, or login credentials, and to not open any links or attachments.
And if they suspect they have been scammed, they should report it to the police station or through the e-Report Centre.
