The Strong Wind Signal No. 3 was issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 4.40 pm on Friday as severe tropical storm Maliksi approaches the city.
It added that the T3 signal will remain in force until 6 am tomorrow (Jun 1).
According to the present forecast Maliksi is expected to make landfall on the coast of western Guangdong around midnight tonight continuing to move inland.
The extensive intense rainbands to its south will gradually affect the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary tonight and tomorrow morning.
There will be heavy showers and strong winds persistently over the regions, along with rough seas and occasional gale winds on high ground tomorrow (Jun 1).
The weather watchdog added that unless Maliksi intensifies rapidly or adopts a track closer to Hong Kong, the chance of issuing a higher tropical cyclone warning signal is rather low.
Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.
