A group of construction workers protested at the Kai Tak Sports Park construction site this morning due to outstanding wages and construction fees owed by the construction company. The amount in question was said to total up to HK$5 million.
About 20 marble-laying workers were seen protesting at the northern entrance of the site, holding banners claiming that the Sports Park and the SAR government have no money to pay them.
The workers also blocked off certain vehicle entrances, and police were called to the scene to mediate.
Sources said the workers began to experience the non-payment of wages in October last year, with the amount in question totaling HK$5 million.
Kai Tak Sports Park said they are highly concerned about the incident and have reached out to the main contractor for further information.
The Park said the incident is related to a commercial agreement between subcontractors and does not involve the main contractor withholding workers' wages. It added that the subcontractor would be obligated to handle the incident properly per the agreement.
