A Hong Kong swimmer died on Thursday morning after he was struck by a sampan in the waters near Ma On Shan, with his left leg torn off in the collision.

Police said the incident happened at around 8.30 am when the man in his 30s was swimming between Sam Mun Tsai in Tai Po and Ma On Shan. He was said to have been hit by a sampan running at high speed.
The man fell into a coma after his left leg was torn off in the collision. He was then rushed to the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin, where he was pronounced dead at 9.16 am despite resuscitation attempts.
Police later arrested a man in his 40s who was driving the sampan for endangering the safety of others at sea.
