The 2023 Hong Kong Lotus Festival, organized by Po Lin Monastery, Sing Tao News Corp and Institute of Horticulture (HK), finally opened today (Fri) as the exhibition features 400 varieties and 4,000 pots of lotuses and water lilies, and has plants beautifully arranged around the monastery, the Big Buddha and the Di Tan.
In an interview with Sing Tao Headline, Venerable Jing Yin said the idea first came in 2000 as he wondered how come there were no lotuses around the monastery given that the second Chinese character of the name Po Lin means lotuses.
He started planting lotuses three years ago but failed, given the city is always hit by typhoons and strong winds. “If we can successfully plant the lotuses which further echo with the cultures of Po Lin, they would serve their special functions. This is why I insist on planting lotuses,” he said.
Apart from the flowers, the exhibition – with the theme “The Enchanting Lotus, Felicity for Hong Kong” – also offers guided tours and lectures on the aesthetics and philosophy of lotuses, as well as flower arrangement workshops.
Cai Jin, Chief Executive Officer of Sing Tao News Corp, said he is honored that the Sing Tao can work side by side with Po Lin Monastery and Institute of Horticulture (HK) to host the grandest lotus exhibition the city has ever seen.
Being able to participate in the event has a lot of special meanings, one of which includes that this year also marks the 85th anniversary of Sing Tao.
Cia also extended sincerest gratitude towards Venerable Jing Yin, other monks at the monastery, staff members and volunteers for their efforts.
The exhibition opens from 9 am to 5.30 pm and runs until July 2 (Sun). Admission is free. Click here for more information.
