Emigrated Hong Kong actor Chapman To Man-chak has promised to offer help to a fellow Hongkonger in Taiwan who cannot afford a cervical spine surgery after falling at a swimming pool.
Last Saturday, a Taiwanese caregiver Luk Seung-ting posted on a Facebook group "Hong Kong people in Yilan" that 61-year-old Hui Yiu-kwong from Hong Kong was injured and could not even walk to the next hospital bed.
She posted a message hoping to find Hui’s relatives as Hui could not afford the surgery.
After the incident came under the spotlight, To who has emigrated to Taiwan said he has instructed his assistant to contact the local welfare department, social workers and the public relation department of Shuangho Hospital.
He also sent his team to the hospital to learn more about incident and added he will take care of all the surgery fees and other follow-up care services.
Replying to media, Hong Kong Immigration Department said they have learned that a Hongkonger is admitted to a Taiwan hospital and have actively reached out to Hui. They added they will maintain close contact with Hui and provide all possible assistance.
Hui earlier told Luk that he has been living in Taiwan for 30 years, but he doesn’t have health insurance and has no money and no family, so the hospital could not perform a surgery and doctors only prescribed anti-inflammatory medicine.
He was originally sent to Taipei City Hospital Zhongxing Branch but was turned down.
He realized that he was unable to move his neck and his arms were numb after regaining consciousness. The money on him was nowhere to be found.
Since Hui is physically impaired, he requires assistance eating, urinating, and bathing, but has no means of paying for medical attention.
