Police have arrested a 35-year-old man who allegedly spat on multiple doors and doorbells at Kwai Chung Estate, the epicenter of the latest Covid-19 outbreak.
The man was a Luk Kwai House resident, and did not have history of mental illness. Police are investigating his motive.
The arrest came after a video went viral online, showing a man walking through a hallway in Kwai Chung Estate and spitting on multiple doors for reasons unknown.
The user who posted the video in a Facebook group said that the incident happened in Kwai Chung Estate where 210 Covid-19 cases have been reported so far.
“I don’t know whether he has Covid, but either way, why would you spit on people’s doors during a pandemic?” The netizen asked, urging those living in the housing estate to sanitize any suspicious fluids on their doors.
Legislative council member Ben Chan Han-pan shared the Facebook post, saying that the man spat on doors, gates, and doorbells.
Chan called such behavior ridiculous: “Citizens are working hard to stop community transmission, and residents of Kwai Chung estate are isolating at home. Meanwhile, this man is attempting to intentionally spread the virus,” Chan wrote.
Chan also advised residents to refrain from touching their faces, to wash their hands as soon as they get home, and to sanitize doors, doorbells, and other surfaces that people would frequently touch with their hands.
Those who have information about the case can call 3661 2920 to contact the Kwai Chung division police station.
