The mother of murder victim Amber Poon Hiu-wing hopes suspect Chan Tong-kai can be transferred to Taiwan via Shenzhen.

The mainland in early December confirmed that a shooting suspect, who committed the crime in New Taipei city before fleeing to Xiamen in November, would be transferred back to Taiwan from Fujian province.

Poon's mother then suggested transferring her daughter's killer, Chan, to Shenzhen, where he was born, before sending him to Taiwan under an agreement of mutual assistance signed by mainland China and Taiwan.

The agreement was signed by the two parties back in 2009, in which the mainland promised to arrest and repatriate Taiwanese criminals who flee to the mainland.

Thereby allowing Chan to go on trial for allegedly murdering Poon in Taiwan in February 2018, she continued.

The mother also apologized to Hongkongers, saying she feels guilty and ashamed for witnessing citizens suffer because of this case.

After Chan fled to Hong Kong in February 2018, the Security Bureau proposed the controversial extradition bill in February 2019, hoping that Chan could then be transferred to Taiwan.

Although the fugitive bill drew fire from the opposition and the mass public, the government continued the use Poon's case to push forward the legislation, which sparked social unrest where protesters demanded the government to withdraw the bill and urged for universal suffrage.

She hoped Hongkongers would forgive her for being used by pro-establishment lawmakers Starry Lee Wai-king and Holden Chow Ho-ding when trying too hard to seek justice for her late daughter, which further led to drastic changes in Hong Kong society.

Earlier, Reverend Canon Peter Koon Ho-ming, who has been offering help to Chan, said the Xiamen case is different as it involved a Taiwanese man. Chan, however, is a Hongkonger and cannot be "repatriated" to Taiwan.
