HKU Student Union moves out of Composite Building, locks changed by workers

Workers this morning went to a number of HKU student union offices inside the Composite Building on campus to replace the door locks, after members of the union vacant their offices and moved out.

The HKU student newspaper Undergrad reported this morning that the union has officially moved out from the building. 

The University had earlier sent an ultimatum to its students' union telling them to move out from the complex by Wednesday - after disowning the union for "glorifying violence" by offering condolences to Leung Kin-fai, a 50-year-old man who had committed suicide after attacking an officer on July 1.

"The university is requesting the union surrender occupancy of the Composite Building within seven days," said Steve Lo Chit-ki, chairman of the HKU accommodation committee, in a letter to the university's student societies and associations.

The letter said student societies and associations under the union can still use offices in the Composite Building after registering with the committee before Wednesday and making a "mutual agreement on terms and conditions with the university."

Security guards were seen standing guard outside the student union offices, barring students from entering the Student Union Council Chamber, which is said to be under renovation.
