The firework display in 2020 for Lunar New Year has previously been canceled due to the city’s social unrest.
In view of Hong Kong’s epidemic, the government has since canceled the Lunar New Year fairs and the Tai Po Lam Tsuen Well-Wishing Festival.
The news has also raised concerns about whether other celebration events such as planting the “first joss stick” at the Wong Tai Sin temple can be given the go ahead.
Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor earlier told citizens to prepare for a “relatively quiet'' Lunar New Year, asking members of the public to avoid social gatherings.
“This is not the time to relax and measures must be in place to contain the spread of the disease,” said Lam.
