Hong Kong is bracing itself for the first cyclone of the season as Tropical Storm Nuri heads towards the western coast of Guangdong, though on its current track it should avoid a direct hit on the territory, RTHK reports.
The Observatory says winds are intensifying gradually and that the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 will be issued between 2 pm and 4 pm.
The Observatory issued the Standby Signal Number One at 8.20 pm on Friday.
Senior Scientific Officer Yeung Kwok-chung said the storm will be closest to Hong Kong on Sunday, bringing squally showers and swells to the seas as well as a few showers on Monday and Tuesday.
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has said that, due to big waves, red flags have been hoisted at Stanley Main Beach, Shek O Beach and Big Wave Bay Beach on Hong Kong Island. People are advised not to swim there.
