A frontline view of our evolving legal profession | The Weekly Reformer | Roden Tong

It is my privilege to launch this new column in The Standard, opening a direct channel with you – the people of Hong Kong. As President of The Law Society of Hong Kong, I am committed to demystifying the work of solicitors and sharing how our profession has shaped, and continues to serve, our city.

When I first ran for Council, I described myself simply: “Call me a reformer.” That spirit remains at the heart of my leadership and this column. Through “The Weekly Reformer,” I hope to offer honest reflections on the reforms we are driving, and to show how the Law Society is evolving to meet the needs of both the profession and the wider community.

Founded in 1907 with just seven members, The Law Society has grown into a long-standing professional body, one of the oldest of its kind not only in Asia, but also worldwide. Today, we represent over 13,000 solicitors. As both regulator and professional association, we are entrusted with upholding the highest standards, supporting our members, and safeguarding the rule of law and judicial independence – cornerstones of Hong Kong’s success.

Our mission extends beyond the legal profession. As an apolitical independent professional body, we serve as a bridge between solicitors and the wider community, providing independent legal perspectives on matters of public interest and responding to consultations to improve the practice environment. We also encourage our members to give back through pro bono work. When Hong Kong faces challenges such as the recent Tai Po fire, our members step up, offering free legal support to those in need.

As we approach our 119th anniversary, I invite you to join me on this journey. Let us build understanding, foster dialogue, and strengthen the bond between the legal profession and the community we serve. Stay tuned for more insights and stories from the frontlines of reform.
