Hong Kong’s enduring passion for movement, creativity, and reinvention takes center stage from November 27 to December 6, as the Hong Kong Dance Company presents its landmark production, Kung Fu Artistry: Bruce Lee’s No Way as Way , at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
As part of HKDance’s 45th anniversary celebrations and to mark the 85th anniversary of Bruce Lee’s birth, the production combines martial arts with contemporary dance to deliver an exhilarating reinterpretation of one of the city’s most iconic figures.
Director and choreographer Yang Yuntao embodies the precision and strength of dancers who have spent eight years mastering martial arts, transforming disciplined form into expressive movement.
The original score by Patrick Lui reflects both the intensity and elegance of Lee’s creative journey, while award-winning actor Aaron Kwok contributes a calligraphic artwork that transforms Lee’s preparatory stance into flowing visual energy. Together, these elements create a multisensory experience blending movement, music, and art.
Art director and costume designer Man Lim-chung explores Lee’s philosophy of fluidity and resilience in an underwater promotional film inspired by the mantra “be water.”
Kung Fu Artistry also anchors a monthlong citywide tribute to Bruce Lee’s legacy, featuring an exhibition at the Cultural Centre, presented by Hong Kong Design Institute, the show’s cultural partner. Coinciding with the performances, the exhibition is inspired by Hung Cho Hei Joe’s award-winning design work, Void . Drawing on Lee’s philosophy, the exhibition spans fashion, digital media, and product design, embodying the spirit of artistic innovation.
Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum will host free pre-show talks on November 15 and 22, featuring Yang Yuntao and guest speakers discussing the creative journey behind Kung Fu Artistry and Lee’s lasting influence on contemporary culture.
Adding to the program, M+ Cinema will showcase some of Lee’s films as part of its “Rediscoveries – Chinese Diaspora in Hollywood” series, underscoring his enduring global influence. These tributes celebrate a visionary whose impact transcends generations.
As the curtain rises, Kung Fu Artistry: Bruce Lee’s No Way as Way emerges not only as a spectacle of movement and imagination but also as a cultural touchstone reaffirming Hong Kong’s position as a vibrant cultural center unafraid to innovate and honor its icons.
