Sunday’s G2 BOCHK Jockey Club Cup brings together more than two elite horses – it reignites a heavyweight rivalry carrying over HK$300 million in combined prizemoney. Hong Kong’s reigning, undisputed champion returns from a layoff just as a bold challenger steps forward.

That champion is Romantic Warrior, the richest racehorse in world history with close to HK$215 million earned. Racing for the first time since April after surgery to insert a pin in his injured front-left joint, the 10-time Group 1 winner steps straight back into his preferred 2,000m arena. At Sha Tin over this trip he has won 10 of 11, his lone defeat a narrow second to Golden Sixty in 2023, and he has swept three consecutive Hong Kong Cups. Patched, polished and prepared, the champion now emerges from his corner for another round.
Across from him stands Voyage Bubble, who has banked more than HK$107 million and turned last season on its head with his historic sweep of the 1600m, 2000m and 2400m Triple Crown – only the second horse in Hong Kong history to achieve it. Few expected trainer Ricky Yiu Poon-fai to roll the dice so early at 2,000m; fewer still imagined he would throw his star directly at Romantic Warrior on the champion’s home ground. But bold choices have defined Voyage Bubble’s rise and he has succeeded when expected to fail more than once.
The matchup forced James McDonald into an agonising decision between two horses he loves and has partnered to major victories. In the end, loyalty held: he stayed with Romantic Warrior. That choice opened the door for Zac Purton to jump aboard Voyage Bubble, adding a rivalry-within-a-rivalry that fits the title fight feel.
And top class 2,000m races around Sha Tin’s tricky two-turn course often resembles the early rounds of a championship bout – measured, tactical and full of feints and footwork. But both camps know the knockout blow is meant for December 14, same course, same distance and HK$36 million on the line in the LONGINES Hong Kong Cup. Still, nobody wants to lose the first exchange.
Sunday’s card offers a powerful undercard. The G2 BOCHK Private Banking Hong Kong Sprint is headlined by the all-conquering Ka Ying Rising, while the G2 BOCHK Private Wealth Hong Kong Mile features the ‘welterweight’ My Wish – tipping just over 1,000 pounds – looking to prove he can fight up a division with the heavyweights.
Trainer Danny Shum says Romantic Warrior is ready.
“He’s well, he’s happy and he’s healthy. He’s had three trials and one turf gallop at Sha Tin and all of the reports from the jockeys are positive.”
Sunday won’t decide the champion – but it will show who lands the first punch.
