Electricity was fully restored at Ha Kwai House in Kwai Chung Estate by around 1.30am on Monday, following a four-hour blackout that plunged the entire building into darkness and affected about 800 households.
The incident occurred around 9.30pm when a loud bang was heard from a plant room near the ground floor lobby, followed by white smoke and a complete blackout across the entire building. Only the rear stairwell and lobby retained lighting.
According to reports, some residents were temporarily trapped in lifts. One elderly resident required police assistance due to low battery on their breathing machine.
More than 100 residents evacuated to an open area outside the building. Firefighters arrived to assist, and Housing Department personnel inspected the plant room. Most residents began returning to their homes around 10.30pm.
Initial investigations suggest the outage was caused by water leakage from the ceiling affecting the plant room. Workers covered the area with tarpaulin and began repairs.
CLP Power confirmed receiving a report at 9.13pm of suspected customer equipment failure affecting about 760 customers in Ha Kwai House. The company dispatched staff who confirmed its supply equipment was functioning normally. CLP's community support team was also deployed to provide assistance.
