The last suspect in the 1989 Sai Kung Lung Ha Wan murder will appear in Eastern Magistrates’ Courts on Saturday morning after being arrested upon return from Thailand on Thursday.
A 62-year-old suspect, Mui Yiu-keung, who had been on the run for nearly 37 years, was captured in Bangkok on Monday and extradited to Hong Kong on Thursday evening. Police immediately arrested him and charged him with one count of murder today.
The case dates back to 31 August 1989, when a 25-year-old mainland Chinese man’s body was discovered buried in sand on Lung Ha Wan beach in Sai Kung.
His head, hands and feet were bound with nylon rope and tape. A forensic examination revealed a fractured skull, brain damage and death by asphyxiation.
Police quickly identified four local male suspects. Two were arrested in Hong Kong on the day of the crime and the following day.
The third was handed over by mainland authorities in May 2000. Two of them were later convicted—one of murder (life imprisonment) and one of manslaughter (8 years).
The fourth suspect, now arrested, fled Hong Kong illegally the day after the murder. After years of investigation and intelligence analysis, police learned he had been living under a false identity in Bangkok.
In December 2025, Thai authorities located him, confirmed his identity and illegal stay of over 30 years with no valid documents, and deported him under Thai immigration law.
He was handed to Hong Kong police upon arrival and formally charged with murder. The case will be mentioned in Eastern Magistrates’ Courts tomorrow.
