Lawmakers Starry Lee Wai-king of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) and Ronick Chan Chun-ying, representing the financial sector, will compete for the presidency of the Eighth Legislative Council on Thursday.
The contest comes after a one-term interval in which the presidency was uncontested. A special election forum will be held at 9.30am and is expected to last no more than two hours.
The forum will be chaired by Gary Chan Hak-kan of the DAB, the most senior lawmaker by length of service among those not standing in the election.

Each candidate will be given five minutes to present their election platform, followed by a question-and-answer session with fellow lawmakers.
After the forum and a 10-minute recess, voting will proceed by secret ballot once the media and members of the public gallery have temporarily left the chamber.
Ballots will be counted openly in the presence of lawmakers, with the process monitored by the candidates’ nominators, Jimmy Ng Wing-ka and Shiu Ka-fai.
If the result remains tied after two rounds of voting, the Legislative Council Secretariat will determine the outcome by drawing lots. All ballot papers will then be destroyed under lawmakers’ supervision.
