The three masterminds behind the 2020 bomb plots -- who were sentenced to up to 18 years in prison -- have appealed their convictions and sentences, with the hearing yet to be scheduled.
In early 2020, three men planted bombs at Lo Wu MTR Station and Caritas Medical Centre, and were also found to be conspiring to place a 20kg bomb outside Sheung Tak Car Park.
The defendants—41-year-old Ho, 31-year-old renovation worker Li, and 35-year-old programmer Cheung—were initially charged with conspiracy to cause an explosion with intent to cause death or serious injury between November 2019 and March 2020.
Li and Cheung played key roles—Li bought materials, rented a storage unit, placed a bomb, and scoped locations, while Cheung built remote controls and designed bombs.
The jury convicted them of conspiracy to cause an explosion of a nature likely to endanger life and cause serious injury to property.
High Court Judge Johnny Chan Jong-herng condemned their actions as “a declaration of war against society,” highlighting their repeated attacks and plans involving highly dangerous bombs, posing severe risks to the public and police safety, as well as attempting to destabilize Hong Kong society.
Ho, the mastermind, was sentenced to 18 years for high risk of reoffending and lack of remorse. Li showed limited remorse; Cheung none. Both were jailed for 16 years and 8 months.
