The University of Hong Kong has vaulted to the number-one position in the QS Asia University Rankings 2026, with President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Xiang Zhang celebrating the milestone as a tribute to the entire campus community’s unyielding pursuit of excellence that is now propelling the city toward global leadership in education, innovation, and technology.

Zhang described the ranking as a resounding validation of HKU’s academic prowess and its broader mission to shape the future of higher education worldwide.
He emphasized that the achievement, coinciding with the university’s 115th anniversary, reflects a collective commitment to gathering brilliant minds for groundbreaking research and interdisciplinary breakthroughs.
These advances, he added, are accelerating Hong Kong’s emergence as an international hub while contributing directly to national goals for high-quality growth through science and education.
Looking ahead, Zhang underscored HKU’s role as a bridge between East and West, pioneering artificial intelligence in teaching and discovery to nurture the leaders who will transform humanity’s tomorrow.
The QS Asia University Rankings are released annually, highlighting the top universities in Asia.
The 2026 rankings were determined based on indicators, encompassing research and discovery, learning experience, global engagement, and employability.
In total, 11 Hong Kong universities were featured on the list, including eight publicly-funded and three self-financing institutions, with nine of them improving their rankings.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has surged from eleventh place in Asia last year to sixth this year, securing second place among Hong Kong institutions. City University of Hong Kong climbed from tenth to seventh, tying with the Chinese University of Hong Kong for seventh in Asia and sharing third place locally.
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University advanced from seventeenth to tenth, entering the continent’s top ten.
Hong Kong Baptist University placed 53rd, while the Education University of Hong Kong ranked 152nd.
Lingnan University came in at 181st, followed by Hong Kong Shue Yan University at 360th. Hong Kong Metropolitan University stood at 393rd, and the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong rounded out the list at 514th.
