The MTR Corporation has begun testing fully automated drones inside its railway tunnels in a bid to enhance inspection efficiency and advance the application of unmanned aerial technology in rail operations.
In collaboration with Traffic Control Technology (Hong Kong), the MTR recently launched a pilot program using beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) drones for automatic tunnel patrol and maintenance tasks.
The trials included placing red flashing lights on the tracks to mark designated work zones for staff and inspecting tracks and nearby facilities along the tunnel.
According to the railway firm, the initial results have been promising. The system successfully completed both the signaling and inspection missions autonomously, demonstrating potential to improve safety and reduce manpower demands during maintenance operations.

An MTR spokesman said multiple rounds of testing have already been conducted. The company will evaluate the outcomes after the six-month trial period before deciding on wider implementation.
The goal is to develop more precise predictive maintenance planning and further enhance the efficiency of smart railway maintenance, the spokesman said.
