The 2024 suicide rate in Hong Kong reached 14.1, higher than the 13.5 recorded in 2023, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention said Wednesday.
It is worth noting that Hong Kong saw a 46.7 percent decrease in the suicide rate among children below 15 last year, with the suicide rate of males decreased by 50 percent, and that of females decreased by 44 percent, according to Coroner’s Court data.
The center described such decreasing trend to be “encouraging, ”and believes that it is associated with increased suicide prevention efforts in schools as well as a growing awareness targeted at this age group.
Despite the decrease in suicide among children, the figure for students aged 15 to 24 in 2024 remained similar to that of 2023.

On the other hand, suicide rates among young adult males from 25 to 39 years old have risen significantly from 10.0 in 2021 to 14.4 in 2024. Major reasons for suicide include financial issues (37.7 percent), with over 40 percent experiencing debt problems, of which illegal gambling being the most common cause.
Suicide Prevention Services saw a 15.5 percent increase in calls from January to August this year, reflecting a rising demand for the Hotline Service.
