The Drainage Services Department has deployed 60 emergency response teams to inspect and clear approximately 240 flood-prone locations across Hong Kong as Tropical Cyclone Tapah moves closer to the territory.
The Hong Kong Observatory hoisted the No. 8 storm signal at 9.20pm on Sunday. The Drainage Services Department activated its emergency control center at 7.20pm and has been implementing preventive measures since Saturday.
As of 10pm, no flooding cases had been reported. The observatory warned that waters along western Hong Kong would be higher than normal on Monday morning due to astronomical tides and storm surge, potentially causing flooding in some low-lying areas.
The Drainage Services Department and Civil Engineering and Development Department have implemented management measures including early warning systems and emergency response arrangements. Temporary flood prevention installations including demountable flood barriers, temporary pumps, sandbags and elevated walkways have been set up in Tai O, Tung Chung Bay, Sham Tseng Village, Ka Wo Lei, Luen On San Tsuen and Lei Yue Mun.
Residents have been notified through the Home Affairs Department to install flood barriers provided last year. The Drainage Services Department said it remains vigilant and maintains close contact with the observatory and Highways Department for rapid response to any flooding incidents.
Residents are advised to keep drains clear and avoid placing objects near drainage inlets. Those encountering flooding should evacuate and can call the 24-hour drainage hotline at 2300 1110 for assistance.
